Dr Margaret Hartnett

Dr Margaret Hartnett is an award-winning, experienced research and innovation specialist with a track record of growing and exiting a hugely successful AI start up.

A senior researcher, European Patent Attorney, Chartered Patent Attorney and company director, Dr Hartnett has spent almost 20 years developing into an executive-level research, innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) specialist.

With a PhD in AI & Analytical Chemistry; and post-doctoral experience in AI & multivariate statistics, Dr Hartnett brings a rare interdisciplinary expertise and perspective. She specializes in working with fast-growth high-tech businesses to develop and commercially deploy cutting-edge technologies.

Dr Hartnett bridges the gaps between the commercial, legal and technology functions of high-tech businesses to harvest and enhance their innovations. She also drafts, files and prosecutes patent applications in several jurisdictions to help clients protect their inventions.

Amanda Brock

Amanda Brock is CEO of OpenUK, the UK organisation for the business of Open Technology in the UK – being open source software, open hardware and open data -with a purpose of UK Leadership and International Collaboration in Open Technology. 

She is a Board Member of the Open Source Initiative; UK Cabinet Office Open Standards Board Member; British Computer Society Inaugural Influence Board Member; Advisory Board Member: KDE, Planet Crust, Everseen, and Mimoto; Charity Trustee, Creative Crieff and GeekZone; and European Representative of the Open Invention Network.

A lawyer of 25 years’ experience, she previously chaired the Open Source and IP Advisory Group of the United Nations Technology Innovation Labs, sat on the OASIS Open Projects and UK Government Energy Sector Digitalisation Task Force. Advisory Boards. She was General Counsel of Canonical for 5 years and set up their legal function.

Amanda was awarded the 2022 UK Lifetime Achievement Award in the Women, Influence & Power Awards, and included in Computer Weekly’s Most influential Women in Tech Long list in 2021 and in their UK Tech50 longlist for 2022.

She is the editor of Open Source, Law, Policy and Practise, second edition being published by Oxford University Press in September 2022 and with open access thanks to the Vietsch Foundation.

Donal O’Connell

Donal O’Connell is formerly a VP of R&D and a Director of IP at Nokia.

He has completed over two hundred IP related consultancy projects, some narrow scope tactical IP projects and some broad scope strategic IP projects for SMEs, MNEs, IP Law Firms, Financial Services Firms and Universities.

Donal is a Visiting Researcher at Imperial College Business School in London where he has taught the IP Elective on ‘IP Management’. He is also a regular speaker at IP conferences.

Donal’s first book “Inside the Patent Factory” was published by Wiley & Sons in 2008. His second book “Harvesting External Innovation” was published by Gower Publishing in 2011. His third book “Intellectual Property Risk Management” was published by Amazon in 2022. He has written almost 200 short papers on various aspects of IP, some of which have been published in several reputable magazines, web sites and blogs.

Since 2013, Donal has been included in the IAM 300 annual listing of the world’s leading IP Strategists.
